Is Grandma Coming to Live with Us?

As more baby boomers retire there are going to be some parents that are not going to be in the position of just being able to make it. Starting late with 401k's, higher then expected health costs and frankly, longer life will add to this phenomenon.

This is the flip side of the coin of kids waiting longer to leave. We may end up living with our parents, between homes over half out life! Don't get me wrong, I love my Mom and Mother-in-law, but I could end up with both!

Personally this is not a burden I want to put on my children. And to be fair it would be child...singular, it is always one that is the go to person, either due to closeness geographically or responsibility. level.

Are we ready to become multi-generational home dwellers like many other countries?

My opinion is that, I think a lot of this will be avoided as people work longer and live better then previous generations. 100 becomes the new 80. People are vibrant and sharp, because they have to be. I also believe that the baby boomer are too independent to migrate this way in droves.

How about you? Do you see yourself becoming your parents...parents? If so are you preparing for this now via budgeting, or as part of your retirement plan?

I Am Getting Too Old For This...Personal Finance

In all of those buddy cop films of the 1980's there was always a young "I can't Play by the Rules"cop and a "6 Hours from Retirement" Cop. At some point in the movie, the older cop would say..."I am getting too old for this..."

I am starting to finally start to understand the older cop! (Don't say why!) He has a perspective that what he might do won't matter to the world, I just want to retire and relax.

This trip, and traveling as a whole is a drain, and in a trade show, and it is even a bigger life suck :) But what is funny is none of it used to bug me. We'd work all day, stay up all night, and be up the next day raring to go! Now...not so much. It really reinforces something: You won't always make what you do now, or have the health to do what you can now, so enjoy it, but make sure you are worrying about tomorrow too.

That poor cop always has a boat or something that he has been saving for and working on for 10 years...and then the bad guys blow it up! Have your boat ready when you are ready to retire, whatever it is!

Personal Finance QuickTake: Retire Rich

Yahoo Finance has a great interview with Henry "Bud" Hedeler from AnalyzeNow.com . 20 years ago Henry was retiring from Boeing, and upon leaving he was give a pretty standard retire package that showed him being able to live comfortably.

Well good thing Henry didn't just trust them, he realized that there were assumptions that he just didn't agree with like that people get less active when they are older so they don't need as much money. At 75 he kills that notion be still being an active skier and traveler.

This is a great message for us all, don't just follow the assumptions given to us regarding retirement. You might want to travel, paint, dance or go to the space with the Russians. AnalyzeNow has some neat tools to play with and test some assumptions.

Your life needs to be planned for, not planning a life around a plan...
